Strengthening of Bulgaria - China economic relations
Author: Tanya Harizanova
Over the last few years the Bulgarian- Chinese relations have strengthened. In January-June 2010 alone, the trade between the two countries has risen 16% up on last year, and Bulgarian exports have increased more than twice. Bulgaria exports to China mostly metal and metal products, as well as mineral and chemical industry ones. China on its part has a growing interest in investment in Bulgaria. According to the Strategy for Bulgaria’s Economic Development, the country should become a EU gate to the trade flows from Asia and mostly from China. “We should turn into the first EU state that partners big Asian industries”, Bulgarian Minister of Economy Traicho Traykov argued. This way Bulgaria can become a transit centre for trade the flows between EU and East Asian economies.
One of the government’s top priorities is the construction of a Bulgarian-Chinese industrial zone near Sofia. Chinese companies have already shown interest in the project. In late June Mr Traykov visited China and signed a memorandum for enhancing bilateral economic and trade cooperation. “The construction of a Bulgarian-Chinese industrial zone is an important and concrete step for attracting Chinese investment”, Bulgarian Minister of Economy said. According to him, the fresh Chinese money will boost the Bulgarian economy and industrial development. On 14th September Deputy Minister of Economy Evgeni Angelov returned from China with the news that by early October Bulgaria will send China documents for setting up a mixed company which will work in the future business zone. It is expected that Chinese businessmen will export part of their production near Sofia and that the industrial zone will develop high tech production on a terrain of 500 acres. Bulgarian Minister of Finance Simeon Dyankov is also on a visit to China.
At a Bulgarian-Chinese trade and economic forum on 15 September participants discussed the potential for joint projects in electronics and electrical engineering, information technologies, car manufacturing, infrastructure construction, energy and tourism.
“An economic and trade delegation visited Bulgaria in June for making contacts with Bulgarian business partners”, Uang Yang, head of the richest Chinese economic region Guandun said. “ The delegation opines that Bulgaria has a stable political environment and an advantage in terms of geographic location. What is more, Bulgaria is a EU member; there is a big potential for our future cooperation. With this forum we aim to hear the opinions of Bulgarian experts on how to strengthen our cooperation in economy, investment, trade, culture, etc. “
Bulgaria offers the most attractive tax regime in the EU, Deputy Minister Evgeni Angelov told Radio Bulgaria and added:
“We are strongly cooperating to set up a joint industrial zone in Bulgaria. It is our firm belief that the National Company Industrial Zones, which is a partner in this project, will bring a good number of Chinese investors to Bulgaria. The company Litex Motors has a joint project with the Chinese Great Wall Motors for car and truck manufacturing near the town of Lovech, North Central Bulgaria. Currently, another project for establishing a factory for flat glass manufacturing is also under way. Chinese companies jointly with the China Development Bank are looking into opportunities for investment in energy and road infrastructure in Bulgaria. Chinese investors are showing heightened interest in Bulgaria, which is very encouraging for the country”, Deputy Minister Evgeni Angelov said in conclusion.
